Travemünde, Germany - 24 Aug 2000
What we did and where we went in Travemünde

Black Watch in the distance at Travemunde
Black Watch in the distance

We were docked by 8am and set off after breakfast. Another sunny day but the clouds crept over later on. It was 70°F/21°C at noon. No other cruise ships around here:)

Travemünde is 15km down the river Trave from Lübeck [the Queen of the Hanseatic League with many buildings dating back to medieval times] and is a fashionable bathing seaside resort, and a registered Baltic Spa town. There is a single nave fishermans church of St Lorenz with a Baroque pulpit and altar dating from 1729. The village centre has 18th & 19th century houses with half timbering, and fine doorways. The lighthouse is one of the oldest German navigation aids dating back from 1539 and 1827.

Lübeck bought Travemünde from the Count of Holstein in 1329. In 1814 the first sea bathing establishment was created. Travemünde is also the largest European port for passenger ferries on the Baltic Sea.

We were required to be back onboard by 4.15pm and we departed at 5pm, the pilot staying for just ½ hour until we were outside the breakwater. 155 NM to the Kiel Canal.
