Travemünde is about 15km from Lübeck and it's port, and a local spa and beauty spot on the coast. People come for a day at the weekends from Hamburg. It is a lovely little town, very pretty and well worth visiting. All the frontage along the river is full of boats and marinas, and the road is covered with 'boardwalk' cafes, shops and stalls etc. A thriving and bustling seaside resort.

Handicraft and marzipan shops with the odd bucket and spade shop inbetween. Not tacky at all. Then you come to the Old Lighthouse and famous 2.5km beach at the estuary. Clean and lovely, big play ground for the children on the sand. The beach is covered with little 2 seater wicker chairs with hoods and storage underneath for people to hire for the day, all in sections with one owner for a specific area. Saves lugging chairs and umbrellas around:) They seemed to be well used. No amusements arcades or funfair rides. A biggish seawater aquadome too, the Aqua Top. That's it. A pleasant day.

We didn't rush off on one of the tours to Hamburg as it was 3 hrs each way on a coach!! Mad fools some people. Others took a taxi into Lübeck, but we wanted a 'relaxing' day for a change. The Black Watch was berthed about 20 minutes walk from the centre, so a shuttle bus was provided, which we used.

Beverley and Howard played for a couple of hours on the beach where a number of the other children off the ship went too, then we wandered all around the streets, had lunch on the front, and took a trip around the town on yet another 'Thomas' train, although this one was yellow. Dave took Howard back about 1.30pm as he wanted to go to the kids club! Beverley went back about 2pm after buying the odd trinket and I stayed another hour or so marzipan shopping. Also I needed to buy another video tape and the cheapest shop, only 6.95dm! wasn't open until 3pm. They were the double the price elswhere so worth the wait:)

Across the estuary to the Priwall peninsula [there is a tunnel and foot passenger ferry over but we didn't go] you can see the four-masted barque "Passat" which now serves as a youth centre.

Then we played cards and board games etc and Beverley went for a swim. Last formal night but Howard was asleep, so only Beverley and I went. When Howard woke up he went to the Garden Cafe buffet with Dave. Then there was a Crew show and introduction of all the kitchen staff. Mainly Phillipino, but also German, Norwegian, Indian and Dutch. 80 nationalities work on this ship!

The Gala buffet at 11.30pm, open for photos at 11.15pm..superb, all ice carvings and butter carvings. All the food was laid out in the shape of some animal/fish or other. A shame to eat it! I didn't anyway as full from dinner! Some of these people eat constantly and I don't know how they do it. Have 4 or 5 courses for dinner and lunch too! I took a load of photos [view them here] and went to bed:)
