Great Gorge Adventure - End of the Great Gorge Railway

End of the Great Gorge Railway.

On September 17, 1935, the gorge wall directly opposite here collapsed sending 4920 tonnes (5000 tons) of shale and slate on to the roadbed of the Great Gorge Railway. Added to the other troubles the railway had, reduced business because of the economic depression, the increased use of the automobile for sightseeing, this rock fall was the final blow. It brought an end to the Great Gorge Railway trips along the lower Niagara Gorge on the American side.
