Oslo, Norway -

We were up at 7am on deck, but a bit misty and hazy, still pretty down the Fjord. The sun appeared as we approached Oslo cruise terminal and were made fast just after 8.00am, but it was to remain sunny with partly cloudy skies all day, around 72°F/22°C. Had breakfast in the Garden Cafe [buffet style] and didn't wonder off until after 9am though, as nothing would have been open anyway. The Sundream [Airtours] berthed just behind us. The Oslo Fjord is some 60 miles long. At the head of the fjord stands Oslo, with the modern town adjoining the site of medieval Oslo, founded by Harald Haardraade, the Viking king killed in 1066 at Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire fighting against King Harold of England. Another connection with England took place when King James VI of Scotland, afterwards James I of England, was married to Anne of Norway and Denmark in Oslo Cathedral in 1589. In 1624 the city was almost completely destroyed by fire allowing King Christian of Norway and Denmark to lay out a more spacious modern town and the new city city was named after him - Christiana. This name was retained for 300 years until in 1925 the ancient city name of Oslo was brought back. Cruise ships normally berth below the massive ramparts of Akershus Castle, the original medieval castle having been built about AD1300 and located strategically overlooking the fjord. During the 17th century and during the reign of Christian IV the castle was modernised and turned into a palace. At the beginnning of the 20th century, archaeological surveys started and restorations were carried out and today within Akerhus is situated the Norwegian Resistance Museum and the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum. We had to be back on board by 5.30pm and we left at 6.30pm, the pilot staying with us for the 3 hours it took to get out of the Oslo Fjord. 275 NM to Copenhagen. |
